This piece was in inspired by a bookshelf my Grandpa had built some 60 years ago. It’s not much to look at and was build from old scraps he must have had lying around. It nearly met its fate when I was cleaning out their home after their passing, but something made me decide to keep it and it now sits in my office. Over the years it has unknowingly become the keeper of life’s many mementoes whether it be wedding pictures, souvenirs from vacations, books or a die cast model. This old shelf had in effect become a visual time capsule of life’s memories thus far.  I set out to craft a piece that as time passes will bring its owner the same enjoyment my Grandpa’s old book shelf has brought to me and the time capsule self was the result.

 

MATERIALS

 

This piece is crafted from solid walnut with maple accent keys. It is finished with a base coat of dye stain to bring out the amber waves in the grain. Then followed by a espresso pigment stain to highlight the straight grain and add depth flowed by 6 coats of water based polyurethane clear coat.
